We've covered this topic before, but this article sums up the key points pretty well.  A paucity of geriatricians + very few medical trainees selecting the field + a surging population of older adults in the USA = a bad case of demand significantly outweighing supply. 

As I've been told by many- geriatrics is not a career, it's a calling.
