Pathways to Preparedness training from the Progressive Center for Independent Living

Emergencies Don’t Wait. Preparedness Shouldn’t Either:

Free Training in Mercer County Helps Senior Citizens and People with Disabilities Build Emergency Readiness

Hamilton, NJ – When emergencies strike, preparation can mean the difference between safety and uncertainty. For many senior citizens and people with disabilities in Mercer County and Hunterdon County, New Jersey, emergency planning is not just helpful — it is essential.

The Progressive Center for Independent Living (PCIL) is addressing this need by hosting a free Pathways to Preparedness Training on May 7, 2026, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at its Mercer office in Hamilton, NJ . This 90-minute workshop is designed specifically for people with disabilities, seniors, and their families to build practical, personalized emergency plans.

“Emergency preparedness is not one-size-fits-all,” said training instructor Yvette Ragsdale. “For people with disabilities, having a plan that reflects individual needs, supports, and environments is critical to maintaining safety and independence during unexpected situations.”

From severe weather events to power outages and evacuations, emergencies can create additional barriers for individuals who rely on medical equipment, mobility supports, or personal assistance. Without a plan in place, these challenges can quickly escalate.

PCIL’s Pathways to Preparedness training focuses on empowering participants with the tools and knowledge they need to take control of their safety. During the workshop, attendees will learn how to identify their personal preparedness priorities, create evacuation and shelter-in-place plans, and assemble a customized emergency Go-Bag.

Participants will also be connected with local resources available throughout Mercer County and Hunterdon County, NJ .

As a Center for Independent Living, PCIL has long been committed to supporting people with disabilities in achieving greater independence and community inclusion. Programs like Pathways to Preparedness reflect that mission by addressing real-world barriers and offering practical solutions that can be implemented immediately.

“Preparedness is about confidence,” said Yvette Ragsdale. “When individuals know what to do and have a plan in place, they are better equipped to handle emergencies and maintain control over their environment.”

The training is open to individuals, families, and community groups, and is offered at no cost thanks to funding through the Inclusive Healthy Communities Grant . Space is limited, and registration is required by April 30.

Community members across Mercer County and Hunterdon County, New Jersey are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to build skills that can protect themselves and their loved ones.
